Configuring Netscape Navigator 3 and Communicator 4 for Macintosh to start helper applications automatically

These instructions show you how to configure your Netscape browser for Macintosh to start an application automatically when you download a file or receive an e-mail attachment.

1. Start Netscape Navigator or Communicator. Click Options, then click General Preferences. With Communicator, click Edit, then click Preferences.

2. Click the Helpers tab. With Communicator, click the arrow next to Navigator, then click Applications.

3. Click on the file type of the file you want to be opened automatically. If the desired file type is not listed under Description, you will have to add it yourself. Some common file types are listed in the table below.

Application name (Handled by) file type (Description)
Microsoft Word application/msword
Adobe Acrobat application/pdf
Stuffit Expander (Macintosh BinHex Archive) application/mac-binhex40

Edit Type window 4. Click the Edit button. You will see the Edit Type window.

5. In the Handled by section, select Application.

6. Click Browse and select the application from the dialog box that appears. This tells Netscape to open the file with the selected application. If you do not know where the application is on the hard drive, you can search for it.

7. Click OK, then click OK again to close Preferences.

8. Thereafter, when you download a file, the helper application you selected will work automatically.
