How do I download and decompress files with Windows?
Downloading and decompressing with Netscape Communicator
Downloading and decompressing with Internet Explorer
To download and decompress a file with Netscape Communicator:
- When you click a link to download a file, you will see a dialog box
like this one:
- Click Save File. You will see a Save As dialog box showing
a list of files on your hard drive.

Your browser might not show you the Unknown File Type dialog
box; it might just show you the Save As dialog box.
- Write down the name of the file you are downloading, in case you need
to find it later. It will have a name like stuff.zip or stuff.exe.
- Browse to find and open the Desktop, then click Save.
The file will be downloaded to the hard drive. We suggest saving to
the Desktop for easy retrieval later.
To download and decompress a file with Internet Explorer:
- When you click a link to download a file, you will see a dialog box
like this one:
- Make sure that the Save this program to disk option is selected.
- Click OK. You will see a Save As dialog box showing
a list of files on your hard drive.
- A new window is displayed showing the download progress. Depending
on the size of the file and the speed of your Internet connection, this
may take a while.
- You will be notified when downloading has completed. Click the Close
button.
After you have downloaded the file:
- If you have a virus checking program,
use it now to check the file for viruses.
- Go to the desktop, then double-click the file. If it is an .exe
file, it will run and install itself. A new folder containing the final
product might be created, or the final product might appear on the desktop.
If it is a .zip file, WinZip
will open (if you have WinZip). Use WinZip to install the final product.
- Make a note of the folder containing the final product so that you
can find it again, either to run the program, or to delete it if you
do not want to keep it. If you cannot find it later, you can search
for it.
- Open the new folder, print or read the readme file and follow
the instructions.
