How do I download and decompress files with Windows 3.1?

Before you begin downloading, create a directory and name it something you will remember, such as download.

To create a directory:

  1. In the Program Manager, open the Main program group.

  2. Open the File Manager.

  3. Click the File menu, then click Create Directory.

  4. Type c:\download as the name for the new directory.

  5. Click OK.

To download and decompress a file:

  1. In your Web browser, when you click a link to download a file, you might see a dialog box like the following.

  2. Click Save File. You will see a Save dialog box showing a list of files on your hard drive.

  3. Your browser might not show you the Unknown File Type dialog box; it might just show you the Save dialog box.

  4. Write down the name of the file you are downloading, in case you need to find it later. It will have a name like stuff.zip or stuff.exe.

  5. Double-click the download directory, then click Save. The file will be downloaded to the hard drive.

  6. If you have a virus checking program, use it now to check the file for viruses.

  7. Open the File Manager, double-click the download directory, then double-click the file. If it is an .exe file, it will run and install itself. A new directory containing the final product might be created, or the final product might appear in the download directory.
If it is a .zip file, WinZip will open (if you have WinZip). Use WinZip to install the final product.

  8. Make a note of the directory containing the final product so that you can find it again, either to run the program, or to delete it if you do not want to keep it. If you cannot find it later, you can search for it.

  9. Open the new directory, print or read the readme file and follow the instructions.
