How do I download and decompress files with Macintosh?
Before you begin downloading, create a folder and name it something you
will remember, such as Downloads. Put this folder somewhere easy
to find, like on the desktop. This is where you will save all files you
download.
To download and decompress a file:
- In your Web browser, when you click a link to download a file, you
will see a dialog box like the following.
- Click Save File. You will see a Save dialog box showing
a list of files on your hard drive.
- Your browser might not display the dialog box above; it might just
display the Save dialog box.
- Write down the name of the file you are downloading, in case you need
to find it later. It will have a name like stuff.hqx or stuff.bin.
- In the Save dialog box, click Desktop, then double-click
the Downloads folder, and click Save. The file will be
downloaded to the hard drive.
- If you are using the Sympatico software, Stuffit
Expander will start and decompress the file.
- If you have a virus checking program,
use it now to check the file for viruses.
- Make a note of the folder containing the final product so that you
can find it again, either to run the program, or to delete it if you
do not want to keep it. If you cannot find it later, you can search
for it.
