E-mail (electronic mail) is a way to send messages to others via the Internet in electronic form. You write e-mail as you would write a letter using a word processor such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. The difference is in how you send e-mail: instead of printing out the message and sending it via the postal system, you simple click a "Send" button. The e-mail should arrive at its destination within a matter of seconds or minutes, depending on where it is headed.

Once you have installed the Sympatico software, you can get your e-mail right away. However, you may want to set up another e-mail program, or your software might have become corrupted and lost your settings. If you need to set up your e-mail software, please look at our e-mail settings page.

Be aware that sending e-mail by clicking an e-mail link on a Web page requires that the e-mail program associated with your Web browser be properly configured to send mail. If not, you will get an error message, something like "No SMTP server has been specified". For example, if you're using Netscape Navigator to browse the Web, but Microsoft Outlook for e-mail, you still need to configure Netscape Mail for sending mail; similarly, if you use Internet Explorer to browse the Web, but Eudora for e-mail, you must configure Internet Explorer's preferences (called Internet Options) for sending mail. Sending an e-mail message is simple if you are using one of the programs listed above. All you need to know is the recipient's e-mail address. To receive e-mail from others, you must give them your e-mail address, which was provided to you when you registered for the Sympatico service. You can also send attachments through e-mail.
