Moving your Sympatico and Internet settings to a new computer

If you have bought a new computer and you want to move your email and Internet settings from your old computer to your new computer, these instructions will guide you through what you have to do.

There are three steps involved:
1) collecting your Internet settings and backing up your Internet files,
2) setting up the Internet software on your new computer, and
3) copying your Internet settings and files to the new computer.

  1. First, you must copy your Bookmarks or Favorites and your email Address Book onto floppy disks. With the exception of Outlook Express for Windows, moving your mail from one computer to another is not recommended. If you do not have a floppy disk drive you could burn them on a CD, or store them on other storage media such as a Zip drive, or even store them in your personal Webspace.

    • If you use Internet Explorer
    • In Windows, the Favorites are located in the Windows directory, typically C:\WINDOWS\FAVORITES.

On a Macintosh, Internet Explorer Favorites are in the Explorer folder in the Preferences folder - usually Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Explorer:Favorites.html.

In Outlook Express for Windows, click File - Export - Messages or File - Export - Address Book, and follow the instructions to export your mail and address book to text files. Back up the exported file on a disk. On a Macintosh, open the Outlook Express Address Book and click File, then Export Contacts and follow the instructions to export the address book. Back up the exported file on a disk.

    • If you use Netscape Communicator
    • Your Bookmarks and address book are in C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\USERS in Windows and Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Netscape Users on a Macintosh. In Windows, the files are BOOKMARK.HTM and PAB.NA2 and in Macintosh the files are Bookmarks.html and pab.na2.

You must also locate your Sympatico configuration information: email address, password, User ID, and Sympatico dial-up phone number. This information will be located either on your Welcome Letter, or on the last page of your Getting Started Guide. You can look up your dial-up phone number on this page.

If you have lost your Sympatico configuration information, you will need to contact Member Services.

  2. Proceed to Setting up the Internet software on your new computer
