Safe surfing and the Sympatico service

There are Web sites and newsgroups which contain material (pictures, text, sounds) which some members may consider objectionable.

The Sympatico service, as your interface to the Internet, does not restrict access to any of this material, or control your use of the material available on the Internet (except as outlined in our Terms and Conditions). However, you may wish to block certain material on the Internet from reaching your computer.

The easiest way to prevent children from seeing objectionable material on the Internet is to protect your Sympatico account by using a password. That way only those knowing the password may use your Sympatico account. This simple method is described in Sympatico Help: Can I restrict the use of my Sympatico account with a password?.

Safe surfing with JuniorNet

Designed in response to parents' demands for a safe online experience for children, JuniorNet has created a fun and exciting online service that controls where your child goes on the Internet.

The installation of specially designed Internet/CD-ROM software allows a child to communicate exclusively with JuniorNet's online partner sites - including favourites Ranger Rick, Highlights for Children and Sports Illustrated for Kids.

Kids have their own private e-mail, but parents have the ability to monitor exactly where their child's e-mail comes from and where itĂs going. There are no ads and no outsiders.

From its original content, custom paint program, interactive puzzles, and reference encyclopedias to a kid-friendly word processor - you'll have it all with JuniorNet!

Internet blocking software

Alternatively, there are several software products available in stores and on the Internet that you can use to block or screen out material you do not wish to view or read on the Internet. You must install and in some cases activate the software on your computer.

Listed below are some existing products, called "blocking" or "filtering" software. They are listed in alphabetical order. Click a product name to go to the software publisher's site for details about price, usage and availability.
